Batteries PDF Print E-mail

Advances in battery technology have made all the difference to electric vehicle.  No longer do you have to worry if you can get home from the office.  The range on a single charge for the Jester is up to 200 miles and it is the latest generation of battery technology that allows this freedom.

Thunder Sky were one of the first companies to sell Lithium ion batteries commercially.  The batteries in the photo are some of the first to come into England back in 2002.  Since then their reliability and performance has improved and several versions offering different performance and energy density have become available. The Zebra battery is quite different from the lithium batteries as the min component is Sodium Chloride (common salt) seeded with a little Nickel.  The temperature inside the double skin is 300 C.  This has two effects, first its performance is not affected by external temperature variations but secondly it will not retain its charge anything like as long as the Lithium vbatteries.  However, it has the reputation for high reliability and very long cycle life  (>3000 full depth of discharge cycles)  The Kokam cells shown here are Lithium polmer batteries.  They are quite flexible being contained in a'plastc bag'.  They have the capability of allowing very rapid charge and discharge. A comparison of enrgy capacity of these high tech batteries with Lead acid.
